Generation Zero July Mailout

A challenge for our generation

Every generation has its challenge.  For our generation, those of us studying or starting out in our careers, it is not fascism or apartheid or the prospect of nuclear war that is the greatest threat to our future.  Rather, it is the ever-growing impact of climate change and the dependence of our society on dwindling supplies of fossil fuels.  More extreme droughts, floods, heat waves, fires and hurricanes are already having a direct impact on millions around the world.  Alongside historically high oil prices, these are affecting our global food supplies, raising prices in the supermarket and putting even more pressure on the world’s poor.

From Nepal, to China and India, the USA and right across the ditch in Australia, young people are uniting and leading the way on this challenge.  United by the lack of action from those in power today, they are standing up for our future wellbeing and the shifting of today’s problems to the future.  As New Zealanders we have a proud history of not just standing up for what is right but leading the way on the world stage.  Now it’s our generation’s turn.  Our wellbeing and that of young people around the world depends on kicking the fossil fuel habit and making drastic cuts in carbon emissions.  As Kiwis we must show moral leadership and courage on these challenges by doing what is needed: planning to reach zero net emissions within a generation.  Together, this is our calling: we are Generation Zero.
